Google is all set to update its Product Ratings policies to restrict the use of automated and artificial intelligence (AI) content in reviews from August 28, 2023.
To implement the policy and guarantee compliance, the company will use a combination of AI techniques and human-based evaluation. This comes after the company filed a lawsuit in June 2023 against con artists who use false reviews and listings to trick and exploit customers.
Clarifying Existing Policies
The revised regulations address a number of topics, such as hate speech, illegal content, personal and confidential information, dangerous goods or behaviours, spam content, and more. Google wants to improve user experience by removing harmful and irrelevant information from its platform.
Restriction on Automated Content
The policies now include a major limitation on automated material. Google won’t accept reviews that were created mostly by an automated programme or artificial intelligence application. This measure is taken to guarantee that reviews are given by actual people and are authentic.
Enforcement Strategy
Google will use a combination of AI techniques and human-based evaluation to successfully implement these regulations. To preserve the integrity of the site, reviews generated by AI and automated programmes will be flagged as spam.
Enhancing User Trust
Google values first-hand accounts and works to remove anything that is deceptive or fake. The platform maintains a fair and open review system by preventing duplicate reviews and highlighting rule violations.
This update is a result of Google’s continued work to improve user experience and establish a reliable environment for both customers and companies.
Users should anticipate a more dependable and instructive review system on Google’s platform once the new policies go into force. Google wants to keep its product reviews and shopping platforms credible by taking action against rules violators and repeat offenders.
Regarding the new Product Ratings policy on Automated Content, Google states that,
We don’t allow reviews that are primarily generated by an automated program or artificial intelligence application. If you have identified such content, it should be marked as spam in your feed using the
<is_spam>
attribute.
